Bio
Artist's Statement

The transformation of a photographic image allows for fictional gain and generational loss, just like the formation of memories.

My singular photographic and mixed media pieces reflect the work of my psyche on themes of memory, mortality and myth. Their meaning comes from a meeting with the viewer’s perception – and for me, it is plant-like – meant to grow.

Animals, and the messages passed between creatures of different awareness, occupied my work from the beginning (Fauna / Horse series).

Family and friends became subjects as I moved through one loss to another (Snapshot  / Inside Out series). The interplay of one’s dark side and light - the necessary both - is integral to my work. Travels in India , Africa , Europe , Asia  and the Middle East became the springboard for my Relic / Memory Map series. Beauty and its edge - temple fragments, textiles, time scarred statues, patterns worked in tile became layers in a piece-- like the psyche’s encounter with the world’s duplicity, the cycles of ruin and renewal, decay and reassembly, the relentless assimilation of individuals and civilizations. Art proceeds from the race’s collective memory.

My work is a form of continuous prayer.

"(God) is the name by which I designate all things which cross my willful path violently and recklessly, all thngs which upset my subjective views, plans and intentions and change the course of my life for better or worse."
C.G. Jung, Letters, vol.2 p.525

On Process

The structure of my process has its own metaphoric possibilities.  The combination of steps varies with each piece (mixing media, cameras and films), but in general begins with my conventional chemical or digital photograph. I then generate a Polacolor print from the digital file, and tear off the pelicule, a positive transparency, which I paint and draw on with oil and ink and then use in place of a negative in a traditional color enlarger. I print on archival chromogenic paper then sometimes transfer the print and/or transparency onto canvas or board or plex and work further with acrylics and resins. This is a willful process--at any stage I can show my hand by drawing, painting, tearing, cutting or digitally manipulating. All of this allows for fictional gain and generational loss, similar to what happens when experience moves from perception to memory-- it reflects the psychological process of teasing out meaning from mystery.  Figures take on an iconic or archetypical status, their surroundings no longer a specific place but a transformed kind of atmosphere.
